Aurobindo Ghose (Sri Aurobindo, 1872-1950) evolved as a thinker and poet through several contrasting stages, of which his manuscripts provide abundant documentation. Growing up in England steeped in European literature, history and philosophy as reflected in his early writings, he came to be recognized as a major figure in modern Indian politics, thought and spirituality. But the fusion of European and Asian influences in his later thought and vision makes him difficult to situate within the boundaries of the Indian tradition. In this lecture, therefore, he will be presented as a transcultural thinker and visionary through representative images drawn from the thousands of pages of his manuscripts preserved in the Sri Aurobindo Ashram Archives in Pondicherry, India.
